Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you offer plumbing services?
What is considered a plumbing emergency?
For instance a burst pipe could cause flooding in your home, which would then damage your property. Not having water could cause a lot of problems. If there’s a gas leak you could be in danger, and many more.
Our experienced team can help with emergency plumbing issues, and can advise on whether you have an emergency or not. If so, we will be on our way to help solve the problem.
What do I do if I smell gas?
- Open all doors and windows to ventilate the building. The fresh air will help.
- Turn off the gas emergency control valve / shut off valve at the meter if you can. Usually it requires a quarter turn to turn off the gas supply.
- Do NOT smoke, light a match or use any other naked flame.
- Avoid using any electrical switches as this could still ignite any escaping gas. This includes light switches and plug socket switches.
- Avoid using your mobile phone until you’re outside.
- Leave the property then call us on 07411 426 255 and let us know your situation. Wait outside for us to arrive, as that is where you’ll be safest.
- Do NOT enter the property and/or turn anything on/off before we arrive. We will check the issue and advise where necessary.
If you don’t already have a Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector installed in your home, you should get one. This will help you as you will be able to detect it in your home if it’s there, and then you can react accordingly. Carbon Monoxide is colourless, odourless and can be fatal.
What can I do if my boiler is not working?
- Repressurise boiler
On the front of your boiler there should be a water pressure indicator. If this indicator is below 1 then your boiler pressure is too low, and needs adjusting. To adjust this you will need to find the filling loop on the boiler – which is usually at the bottom of the boiler. Once you’ve found the filling loop, make sure that the boiler is turned off and the ends of the hose are attached to the valve. Open the valves – you will hear water filling up the system. Finally watch the water pressure indicator until it reaches 1.5-2, then close the valves and switch the boiler back on.
- Reset boiler
The majority of boilers are different, so we would recommend that you refer to the manual to find the reset button. Once you find the button push it for at least 10 seconds, unless the manual says otherwise. Wait a few minutes, then hopefully the boiler will start working again. If not, try resetting the boiler again.
How do I bleed my radiator?
If you notice that your radiator is making strange noises, there is likely trapped air inside it. Bleeding the radiator will help fix that.
First of all you will want to make sure that you have a radiator key to hand. You should have one, but if not you can get one from a DIY store, or online. Also get a cloth or towel to catch any water.
Follow these steps to bleed your radiator:
- Turn your heating off, if you haven’t already If you’ve had the heating on, turn it off and wait for the radiator to cool. You don’t want to try bleeding the radiator when the heating is on as the radiator will be hot to touch and hot water might spray at you. If you have protective gloves and clothing it may be worth wearing them so that you don’t accidentally scold yourself.
- Use your radiator key to turn the valve on the radiator. Attach the key and turn it slowly anti clockwise until you hear a hissing sound. This sound is the trapped air escaping. Use your towel or cloth to catch any water.
- Once the hissing stops and only water is coming out, turn the key clockwise to retighten the valve. You will want to do this quickly to stop too much water escaping.
- Turn the heating on.
- Go to your boiler and check the pressure gauge. Bleeding the radiator may have caused the pressure to drop. If it’s too low you will need to top it up. Make sure that you turn off the heating and the boiler then do the following: Find the filling loop on the boiler – which is usually at the bottom of the boiler. Once you’ve found the filling loop, turn the boiler off and make sure the ends of the hose are attached to the valve. Open the valves – you will hear water filling up the system. Finally watch the water pressure indicator until it reaches 1.5-2, then close the valves and switch the boiler back on.
- Turn the heating on again.
- Check that the radiator is heating up properly. You can check this by touching the radiator to see if it’s cold at any point (most likely to be the top), and if the radiator is rattling. If you aren’t having those issues then you have successfully bled your radiator.
If you have issues with the radiator, or bleeding it didn’t work give 24 Hour Plumbers Ely a call on 07411 426 255 and we will do our best to help you.
How do you spot a leak?
Leaks aren’t always easy to spot, however it can cause real damage to your property and increase your bill costs. There are multiple things you can do to check for a leak. To check, take regular meter readings and look for an increase in your usage. If there is an increase, this could be down to a leak. Look out for lower water pressure from your taps, look out for waterlogged areas in your garden and finally, check if you have any noisy pipework. If you do these checks and find a leak, give us a call and we will do our best to help.
How do I know if I need a new tap?
Some signs that you might have a faulty tap are constant dripping, leaking handles, problems with your shower or rust. If you find that your tap is constantly dripping water, even when the water is off, then something is definitely wrong. After a long time, some handles may begin to leak at the base which can be caused by a degrading pipe. Often a shower and bath tap will be connected to the same water supply, so if you have the shower on and notice water dripping out of the bath tap, you may need to replace it or have it repaired. Simply from old age, some taps can start to rust. Regular cleaning can prevent any build-up over time, however if your tap is rusting then it probably does need replacing. If there’s anything we can help with regarding your taps, get in touch.
How do I test if my toilet is leaking?
On the assumption that your toilet is leaking, the easiest way to check would be your overflow pipe in the tank. Look in the tank and check that the water level isn’t above the overflow pipe. If it is, then you might have a problem with your fill valve. It may be that you see water going down the toilet bowl when it hasn’t been flushed, if so you could have a leak. If your toilet is making lots of noise, then you probably have a leak. Another way that you can check is by dropping a dye tablet or some food colouring into the tank. Once you have done so, give it 20 minutes then go back to the toilet. If you look in the toilet bowl (not the tank) and see coloured water, you have a leak.
What should I do to take care of my kitchen sink?
Periodically check under your sink for moisture or small leaks. You will want to get these fixed as quickly as possible so that you’re not wasting any water. This could increase your water bill cost, which you definitely don’t want. You will also want to get this fixed quickly as the water could damage your fixtures and pipes. Also, remove and clean your tap aerators annually to ensure that the flow of water is even. Make sure overflow holes on tubs and vanities are clear and open to prevent water damage to the floor.
What causes leaks and burst pipes?
One of the most common causes of burst pipes and leaks is water pressure. If a pipe, toilet or water pump becomes clogged, it can increase the water pressure. This can make the pipes expand and burst. Another one of the most common causes of burst pipes and leaks is the cold. When pipes freeze, the water inside them expands which can lead to cracks or bursts in your pipework. If you think there’s a blockage in your water system or the water has frozen in your pipes, give us a call.
What should I do if I have a burst pipe?
A burst pipe can be classed as a water emergency. This can cause serious damage to your home’s structure and electrical wiring. If you discover a burst pipe in your home, follow these steps:
- Turn off the main stop tap. Most can be found under the kitchen sink or where the service pipe enters your home.
- Drain the system. You will need to turn on all of your cold taps.
- Turn off water heating systems. Switch off the immersion heater, central heating and other water heating systems that you have. Once the water heating has shut down, turn on all the hot taps to help drain the system.
- Turn off your electrical devices and appliances. If water leaks near your electrical devices or appliances, switch off the mains immediately.
- Once you have followed these steps, give us a call and we will try to come and fix the issue as soon as possible.
